La Gioconda

La Gioconda is a four-act opera by Amilcare Ponchielli, adapted from an Italian script by Arrigo Boito (as Tobia Gorrio), adapted from a prose script by Victor Hugo in 1835. The opera La Gioconda premiered in 1876 at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. It was a major success for Punchielli and the most successful new Italian opera between Verdi's Aida (1871) and Otello (1887). It is also a famous example of the Italian Grand Opera genre, equivalent to the French Grand Opera.

The opera has several complete recordings and is performed regularly, especially in Italy. It is one of the few operas that has a major effect on each of the six main sound types.
