The Teatro alla Scala opened on 3 August 1778 with Antonio Salieri's L'Europa riconosciuta. Designed by neoclassical architect Giuseppe Piermarini and commissioned by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, it has stood at the heart of Milan's cultural life for nearly 250 years.
Destroyed by bombing in 1943, La Scala was the first major public building rebuilt in postwar Milan, reopening in 1946 with a concert conducted by Arturo Toscanini. Today it is regarded as one of the world's leading opera and ballet houses, hosting the historic premieres of works by Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini and unforgettable performances by artists such as Maria Callas.
Each season opens on 7 December for Sant'Ambrogio, Milan's patron saint, with a gala that is one of the most prestigious nights on the international opera calendar.
