This gripping tragedy, based on Walter Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor, blends gothic atmosphere, psychological depth, and some of the most dazzling vocal writing in the operatic repertoire.

The production is led by conductor Speranza Scappucci, a renowned interpreter of bel canto who made her La Scala debut with Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi. The staging, sets, and costumes by visionary director Yannis Kokkos—originally created in 2003 for Riccardo Chailly—portray the opera as a relentless hunt, propelling Lucia toward the abyss of madness. Donizetti underscores her descent with haunting orchestral writing, including the ethereal sound of the glass harmonica during the legendary “mad scene.”
